Quarry Park - Duluth, Minnesota
Quarry Park in Duluth, Minnesota, is a fantastic hidden gem just north of the city. Originally owned and worked by the Duluth Crushed Stone Company, Quarry Park is known for the 1,000-foot long, 100-foot high cliff left after the company ceased operations.
The park gets its name from the historic quarries that once operated here, extracting stone for construction in the area. Those old quarries have since been transformed into a city managed park with unique charm. During the winter months, the park becomes a hub for ice climbing, thanks to something special they do called "ice farming." Local climbers intentionally create thick, climbable ice by spraying water on the quarry cliffs, attracting ice climbers from all over. It’s one of the few places in the area where you can experience ice climbing, and it draws adventure-seekers from near and far. For rock climbers, the park’s cliffs and rocky areas offer excellent bouldering opportunities. In the warmer months, there are plenty of trails offering amazing views and the chance to spot local wildlife.
Quarry Park is also home to a disc golf course known for its unique, scenic views, making it a popular spot for disc golf enthusiastsAnd if you’re just looking to relax, there are plenty of picnic spots where you can enjoy the peaceful surroundings. The park is open year-round, so whether you’re hiking in the summer, ice climbing in the winter, or tackling the disc golf course, there’s always something to do. Enjoy a few photos I took while visiting!
