Entry 96: Brighton Beach in Duluth: Lakeside Serenity, Lakewalk Access, and Rocky Shoreline Charm

Brighton Beach in Duluth, Minnesota—officially known as Kitchi Gammi Park—is a local favorite along Lake Superior’s rugged North Shore. Known for its rocky shoreline, peaceful vibe, and unbeatable views, it’s the kind of place that offers a bit of everything: recreation, relaxation, and a deep connection to the natural beauty of the Great Lakes region.

The beach is located at the eastern end of Duluth’s Lakewalk, a popular trail that winds for miles along the waterfront, eventually reaching the historic Canal Park district. Whether you're walking, biking, or just taking a slow stroll, the Lakewalk is one of the best ways to experience the city’s lakeshore. Brighton Beach serves as a quieter, more nature-focused end of that journey, and it's the perfect place to start or end your trek.

One of the highlights of Brighton Beach is the soundscape—there’s nothing quite like the rhythm of waves crashing against the large basalt rocks that line the shore. It’s easy to spend an afternoon beachcombing, skipping stones, or simply listening to Lake Superior’s meditative soundtrack. In warmer months, adventurous visitors try kayaking or fishing from the rocky outcrops. Swimming is possible too, if you can brave the frigid water temperatures!

The park also includes a pavilion, picnic areas, grills, and accessible restrooms, making it an ideal spot for family outings or a lakeside lunch. My personal favorite thing? Packing a sandwich and just watching the lake sparkle under the sun or fog roll in across the water.

In recent years, the City of Duluth invested in a major shoreline restoration and park improvement project. Brighton Beach had long suffered from erosion due to the intense wave action of Lake Superior. To protect the shoreline and preserve access for future generations, the city stabilized the bluff and rerouted parts of the Lakewalk. These upgrades also enhanced accessibility with smoother trails and better signage, while preserving the natural character that makes the park so beloved.

Originally established in the 1920s and named “Brighton Beach” after its English namesake, the area was renamed Kitchi Gammi Park—a nod to the Ojibwe term Gitchi-Gami for Lake Superior. That Indigenous history remains an important part of the region’s identity.

Whether you're visiting Duluth for the first time or you're a seasoned local, Brighton Beach is the kind of place that calls you back. It’s where you can unplug, reconnect with the water, and enjoy the simple pleasures of the outdoors.
