Amnicon Falls State Park in Douglas County, Wisconsin, is an absolute gem and one of my favorite stops during some free time I had. It was totally worth the short drive from Duluth to experience its beautiful waterfalls and cozy, rustic vibe. The park is all about the stunning falls, like the Upper and Lower Amnicon Falls and the quirky Now and Then Falls, which flow along the Amnicon River. The river winds through fascinating rock formations, including ancient sandstone and basalt from an old geological rift. It’s a great place to explore on foot, with easy-to-moderate hiking trails that lead to amazing views of the waterfalls and the river.

There’s plenty to do—picnic areas with tables and grills make it easy to relax, and if you’re up for an overnight adventure, there are rustic campsites for tents and RVs. One of the highlights is the park’s iconic covered bridge, which not only looks charming but also offers some of the best views of the falls. Wildlife is abundant too, so keep an eye out for deer, birds, and other critters—it’s a photographer’s paradise!

The park is open year-round, and each season brings its own magic. In spring, the waterfalls roar with snowmelt, summer brings lush greenery, fall is all about vibrant colors, and winter turns the park into a snowy wonderland. It’s just about 15 miles southeast of Superior, Wisconsin, and all you need to visit is a Wisconsin State Park sticker or a day-use pass. Whether you’re up for hiking, camping, or just soaking in the beauty of the falls, Amnicon Falls State Park is the perfect spot to connect with nature—I’m so glad I made the trip!
