Entry 79: 2024 National Outdoor Recreation Conference Recap: Learning, Landscapes, and Lake Tahoe

The 2024 National Outdoor Recreation Conference in Stateline, Nevada, set against the stunning backdrop of Lake Tahoe, was an unforgettable experience—complete with a surprise touch of winter! This year’s event gave me the chance to reconnect with passionate professionals, including several members of the board of directors (past and present), and even meet the first-ever president of our organization. The energy and camaraderie were inspiring.

This conference really reminded me how pivotal this organization has been in shaping my professional path. From mentorship and education to a community of like-minded peers, it's been a cornerstone of my growth. I came away with a deepened appreciation for the people and values that drive our field forward.

Sipping, Soaking, and Socializing

The festivities kicked off with a lively reunion at South Lake Brewing Company. The stout was rich and smooth, the wings hit the spot, and the atmosphere was just right for swapping stories and catching up. I’m a sucker for a cool logo too—and theirs does not disappoint.

That same night, I had the chance to cruise Lake Tahoe aboard the M.S. Dixie II for a dinner experience that checked every box. Snow-capped mountains, shimmering water, delicious food, and impeccable service made this one of the most scenic evenings I’ve ever had. Highly recommend!

Field Experiences in the Heart of Tahoe

We began our field experiences with a visit to Van Sickle Bi-State Park, a unique place that spans both Nevada and California. It was fascinating to hear from Nevada State Parks staff about the logistics and benefits of managing a park across state lines.

Next up was Spooner Lake, blanketed in fresh snow. Here, a panel of forestry and park professionals spoke about managing this incredible space within the Lake Tahoe Basin. Surrounded by aspens and over 12,000 acres of open forest, Spooner Backcountry is truly a gem.

Then it was off to Sand Harbor State Park for lunch and a beachfront discussion on visitor use management. We wrapped up with a walk along the East Shore Trail—called “America’s Most Beautiful Bikeway”—where we learned about managing access, infrastructure, and natural resources. The views? Unreal.

Conference Highlights and Final Reflections

After a jam-packed day, I grabbed dinner and a bourbon at State Line Brewery—a cozy, speakeasy-style spot tucked below street level. The wings were great, the atmosphere even better. A great way to close out a memorable day.

Thursday was full of educational sessions, including one I had the honor of leading. I moderated a panel on the future of outdoor recreation in higher education with incredible colleagues: Dr. Zajchowski (University of Idaho), Dr. Goldberg (Cal Poly San Luis Obispo), and CJ Blye (RC Strategies). Our discussion sparked meaningful dialogue about the evolution of academic programming in outdoor recreation. The room was engaged and energetic—we could have talked for hours.

We closed the conference at the Basecamp Beer Garden. Music, local brews, fire pits, and games created a perfect laid-back vibe—though I did make a quick run back for my hoodie. Classic May-in-Tahoe surprise.

As I caught my red-eye flight home, I felt immense gratitude for this community. Events like NORC remind us why we do this work—to learn, to grow, and to connect.
