Entry 72: Exploring Burlington, Vermont: A Cyclist’s Paradise
Nestled between the shimmering shores of Lake Champlain and the rolling Green Mountains, Burlington, Vermont is a dream destination for cyclists. Whether you're an experienced rider or someone just looking to explore the outdoors on two wheels, Burlington offers stunning scenery, smooth trails, and a vibrant cycling culture.
Let’s take a ride through some of Burlington’s best biking spots—Island Line Trail, Ethan Allen Park, the Burlington Greenway, and explore why this small city is one of the Northeast’s best bike-friendly towns.
The Island Line Trail
The Island Line Trail is a crown jewel among Burlington’s outdoor experiences. This 14-mile rail trail begins near downtown and follows the shore of Lake Champlain, offering unmatched views of the lake and Adirondack Mountains. The highlight of the trail—though I didn’t get there this trip—is the Colchester Causeway, a narrow stretch that juts out into the lake with water on both sides. You can even cross by bike ferry during warmer months, making for a truly memorable ride.
Ethan Allen Park
Ethan Allen Park, located in northern Burlington, is a great stop for both biking and hiking. This wooded park honors Revolutionary War hero Ethan Allen and includes winding trails, picnic areas, and the impressive Ethan Allen Tower. After a short, uphill climb, you’ll be treated to panoramic views that are well worth the effort. It's the perfect place to catch your breath, snap some photos, and soak in the local history.
The Burlington Greenway
Also known as the Burlington Bike Path, the Burlington Greenway is an 8-mile paved trail that hugs the waterfront, connecting neighborhoods, parks, and beaches. It’s ideal for cyclists of all ages and skill levels. Along the route, you’ll pass by Waterfront Park, North Beach, and scenic lookouts with benches to relax and admire Lake Champlain. I rode a rented e-bike, which made it a breeze—and let me cover even more ground with ease!
Getting Around by Bike
Burlington makes it easy to ditch the car. With extensive bike lanes, designated paths, and ample bike racks, it’s a city designed with cyclists in mind. Its compact size means everything is a quick ride away—from coffee shops to bookstores to lakeside parks. The city’s bike-sharing options and supportive cycling culture make this a top-tier destination for pedal-powered adventure.
Recap
With its perfect mix of scenic trails, historical landmarks, and accessible infrastructure, Burlington, Vermont is more than just a pretty place—it’s a cyclist’s paradise. Whether you're coasting along the lake or winding through shaded forests, you'll quickly discover why Burlington is one of the most bikeable cities in New England.
