Entry 27: Birthday Getaway to Wiederkehr Village in Altus, Arkansas
To celebrate another lap around the sun, I decided to stick with tradition and do what I do best—eat well and explore locally. "Treat yoself" in my world tends to revolve around food... and honestly, I’m perfectly okay with that.
So this year’s birthday adventure took me to Altus, Arkansas, and more specifically to Wiederkehr Village—a historic winemaking community nestled in the Ozark Mountains.
A Taste of History: Wiederkehr Wine Cellars

Founded in 1880, Wiederkehr Wine Cellars is one of the oldest wineries in the state and an anchor of Altus’ Swiss-German heritage. You’ll find old-world charm and Swiss-style architecture, scenic vineyard views, and, of course, plenty of wine.
The wine tasting is worth the stop, but don’t skip the Wiederkehr Weinkeller Restaurant, located in the original hand-dug wine cellar. The space is rustic, cozy, and distinctly European. Their menu leans into Swiss and Continental fare, designed to pair beautifully with house wines. We dined on-site and, yes, everything lived up to birthday expectations.
Why Altus Deserves a Visit
Altus is more than just wine—it’s a gateway to the Ozarks, and the vibe is just the kind of peaceful, scenic, small-town experience I like to soak up when I’m not chasing trails or backroads.
A few reasons to keep Altus on your travel list:
-
Multiple local wineries with tastings and tours
-
Historic churches and heritage museums
-
Easy access to Ozark–St. Francis National Forest for hiking, birding, and sightseeing
-
Quiet streets, kind people, and relaxed energy
So here’s my question for you:
Where’s your go-to birthday lunch or dinner spot? Or your “treat yoself” destination?
Drop your favorites in the comments or DM me on Instagram. I’m always looking for new places to explore, and I might just follow your lead on the next adventure. @MikeIsOutside
