Entry 9: Top 5 Fishing Lakes in Arkansas (Plus a Local Favorite)

Arkansas is home to some of the best fishing in the South, with scenic lakes that offer both peaceful getaways and serious angling opportunities. Whether you're casting from a boat, kayak, or the shore, these lakes deliver year-round.

Here are five of the most popular fishing lakes in the state—plus one personal favorite you won’t want to overlook.

1. Lake Ouachita

Located in central Arkansas, Lake Ouachita spans over 40,000 acres and is renowned for its crystal-clear water and diverse fish populations. Anglers can catch largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappie, catfish, and striped bass. It’s a go-to destination for kayak fishing, shoreline access, and boat-based outings, all surrounded by the Ouachita Mountains.

2. Bull Shoals Lake

Nestled along the Arkansas-Missouri border, Bull Shoals Lake offers over 45,000 acres of open water and deep coves. Known for excellent bass fishing (largemouth, smallmouth, spotted), the lake is also home to catfish, crappie, and walleye. The clear water and thriving forage base make this a hotspot for fly fishing too.

3. Norfork Lake

Also located near the Missouri border, Norfork Lake covers more than 8,000 acres and is a favorite for multi-species fishing. Expect to catch bass, catfish, crappie, and walleye. Below the dam, anglers can fish for rainbow trout in the cool tailwaters—a prime spot for fly fishers. The lake’s quiet coves and forested hills offer peaceful surroundings.

4. Beaver Lake

In the northwest corner of the state near Rogers and Fayetteville, Beaver Lake boasts 28,000 acres of water and year-round fishing opportunities. With healthy populations of bass, catfish, crappie, and walleye, the lake is a favorite among tournament anglers and weekend adventurers alike.

5. DeGray Lake

Located near Arkadelphia in central Arkansas, DeGray Lake offers more than 8,000 acres of clear water for fishing and recreation. Species here include bass (both largemouth and smallmouth), crappie, catfish, and walleye. The lake is ideal for kayak fishing and family outings, with easy shoreline access and scenic surroundings.

Honorable Mention: Lake Dardanelle — My Favorite

While the above lakes get most of the spotlight, Lake Dardanelle in western Arkansas holds a special place in my heart. Located near Russellville and Dardanelle, this 34,000-acre reservoir is popular for both recreational and tournament fishing.

You’ll find largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, striped bass, and more in these waters. With numerous boat ramps, marinas, and scenic access points, it’s perfect for both casual casts and competitive events. It also happens to be the lake I call home—and I wouldn’t trade it for any other.

Final Thoughts

Arkansas is a hidden gem for freshwater anglers, and whether you're chasing trophy bass or just enjoying a quiet day on the water, these lakes offer something special. If you haven’t fished Lake Dardanelle yet, I highly recommend giving it a try.

Happy fishing—and I wish you tight lines and great times!
