Jacksonport State Park - Newport, Arkansas
Jacksonport State Park
Nestled along the banks of the White River in Northeast Arkansas, Jacksonport State Park holds historical significance as a strategic river port town that served as the county seat of Jackson County from 1854 to 1892. Central to the park is the meticulously restored Jacksonport Courthouse, a structure dating back to 1872, now functioning as a museum (free admission) that provides insights into the town's history during the Civil War and the subsequent Reconstruction era. The park's location on the White River underscores the vital role of river transportation during the 19th century, with steamboats contributing significantly to the region's economy and connectivity. Visitors to the park can explore the rich Civil War history of Jacksonport, which witnessed occupations by both Union and Confederate forces.
Facilities onsite include 20 Class A campsites (50 amp service), a swimming beach, pavilion, picnic sites, a playground, and the half-mile Tunstall Riverwalk. Today, exhibits in the park's 1872 courthouse and programs by park interpreters share the story of this historic river port - park staff offers guided tours, interpretive programs, and educational activities to enhance visitors' understanding of this historical site.
