Davis demonstrated extraordinary valor in the face of intense enemy fire, earning him the Distinguished Service Cross, the second-highest military decoration for valor. Tragically, Davis did not live to see the end of the war. He succumbed to wounds received in battle on October 19, 1918, just eight days after his heroic actions.
