Entry 17: Unplugged at Longpool Recreation Area - Dover, Arkansas
Fun Fact: Longpool gets its name from the “long pool” stretch of the Big Piney Creek that winds through the area—one of the most scenic waterways in the Ozarks.
On Monday afternoon, I canceled a few meetings, packed up the kids, and traded screen time for sunshine. Just a short drive north, Longpool Recreation Area offered the perfect escape. Surrounded by the Ozark National Forest, this spot has been a beloved destination for generations.
Swimming, History, and Big Piney Creek
Big Piney Creek, a nationally designated Scenic and Recreational River, flows right through the heart of Longpool. Its clear waters, natural pools, and dramatic bluffs create an unbeatable setting for:
-
Swimming and wading
-
Canoeing and kayaking
-
Fishing
-
Camping and picnicking
-
Hiking the surrounding forest trails
We spent over three hours splashing, floating, and relaxing. The water was refreshing, the scenery unforgettable, and the smiles on the kids’ faces made it all worth it—even if they did ask for screen time again while I made dinner.
A Place Full of Stories
Longpool has long been a gathering place for family picnics, weekend campers, and outdoor lovers. Its roots date back to the early 1900s when its natural beauty began attracting locals and travelers alike. The nearby rock bluffs and forest trails offer a peaceful retreat, perfect for anyone looking to reconnect with nature.
Whether you're passing through or planning a day trip, Longpool is a simple reminder of why Arkansas is better outside.
