Entry 16: A Quick Stop at Hobbs State Park & Conservation Area
An Impressive Visitor Center
My first stop was the visitor center, and let me tell you—it’s fantastic. The exhibits offer a great walkthrough of the park’s history, ecology, and recreation opportunities. The interactive displays make it an ideal stop for all ages, and I really enjoyed chatting with a few of the friendly and knowledgeable park staff. Whether you’re new to the park or just looking for your next trail, this is the perfect starting point.
Hiking the Van Winkle Historic Site Trail
Next up, I hiked the short but rewarding Van Winkle Historic Site trail. While the trail isn’t particularly strenuous, the midday heat definitely added a challenge. Still, the payoff was worth it—shaded forest, a quiet creek, and the historic remnants of the Van Winkle mill site, once one of the largest sawmills in the region during the 1800s. Interpretive signs along the way made it easy to appreciate the historical significance of the area.
Already Planning a Return Trip
Hobbs State Park is huge—over 12,000 acres of forest, trails, and shoreline along Beaver Lake—and I barely scratched the surface. I’m already planning a return trip to hike more trails, visit the lake, and maybe even camp.
If you’re anywhere near northwest Arkansas, don’t skip Hobbs. Whether you’re a history buff, a hiker, or just looking for a peaceful place to unwind, this park checks all the boxes.
